What Do Employees Value Most in the Workplace

What Do Employees Value Most in the WorkplaceWhat Do Employees Value Most in the WorkplaceBusinesses in every industry are faced with the task of recruiting and retaining quality employees. Smart geschftsleben owners know that they have to offer competitive pay and benefits to potential recruits, but there are many different factors that job seekers consider when evaluating a potential offer. Here are seven things that employees tend to value most in the workplace Competitive Salary Lets face it salary is always a key factor in employee recruitment and retention. Employers that pay better than average wages tend to attract (and keep) the highest quality employees. While salary isnt everything, it does factor heavily into an employees perception of their own value within the organization. The only way to compensate for low wages is to provide an exceptional work environment with opportunities for career development. Good Benefit Package Employees do place a fair amount of valu e on a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits that employees find desirable may include many different options including health insurance, dental insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, maternity leave, tuition reimbursement, housing allowances, travel compensation, training courses, and the opportunity to gain industry certifications. Flexible Schedule Having a good work/life balance is always a plus for workers, so they tend to value the chance to have flexible hours. Employees tend to favor jobs where they can have earlier or later start times. They also appreciate the ability to work from home, either during normal work hours or to schliff up projects that could not be completed at the office (in the latter case earning some compensatory time or extra pay depending on the nature of their employment). A flexible schedule can be particularly valuable for those with kids, pets, or other family commitments. Opportunity to Advance Employees like to know that there is a pathwa y that will allow them to move up the ladder in an organization. They do not want to be stuck in a dead end job with no possibility for career growth and development. Employers that promote from within and offer development opportunities will have a higher rate of employee retention than those that do not. Recognition It is always nice to be recognized for contributions at work, whether this recognition comes in the form of verbal praise, promotions, bonuses, or other perks. Even organizations that cant afford expensive rewards programs can instruct the management team to let employees know when they are doing well.An employee of the month program is just one example of a zero cost form of employee recognition. Effective Management Leadership starts at the top, and a poor management team will discourage even the most dedicated group of employees. Organizations with strong leadership and geistesbild will be able to hold on to quality workers. At the very least the management team should be involved in goal setting, enforcing company standards of performance and behavior, and recognizing the contributions of various team members. Team Atmosphere A good team is critical to the success of a business, so co-workers are very important to an employees perception of their job. If the team doesnt function it can cause big problems over the long term, leading to higher than normal levels of employee turnover. Management can often be helpful in correcting problem behavior before it becomes pervasive throughout the team. Final Word A positive work environment includes many factors, and businesses would be wise to check as many of the boxes as possible. Employers that do not provide a quality work environment will have to verstndigung im strafverfahren with an increased number of employees turning in their resignations to pursue employment with those that do.

Project Management Training Options

Project Management Training OptionsProject Management Training OptionsMany people leading projects today havent got there through a concerted effort to be a project manager. Ive never met anyone who will confess to having wanted to be a project manager as a child - most of us didnt even know the role existed. Then we get into the workplace and suddenly there are projects that need to be done. Just like that youre a project manager, whether you have the job title or not. Whether you fell into project management like this, or took another route - perhaps a project management degree - and made it a definitive career choice (like me), training is always a good thing. How Attending Project Management Training Is Beneficial Project management training helps you enhance your skills, be more successful at work and build your reputation as a great project manager. Project management training can significantly boost your income. The most recent PMI Salary Survey research shows that thos e project managers with the PMP credential specifically can earn on average around 20% more than those without. Employers recognize that training and qualifications have an impact on your professionalism and success rates and are prepared to pay for that. Project management training can give you skills in areas that you would benefit from developing. There are courses covering every single one of the project management knowledge areas and soft skills as well. So whatever it is that you feel you want to improve, there will be a course out there to support you. There are literally hundreds of project management training courses out there and it can be daunting to abflug the selection process of choosing which is best for you. The best place to begin is to work out what sort of training you want. Do you learn best with other people around? How much time have you got to study? Here is a look at the different options available for project management training, including classroom study, l earning online (with and without an instructor), self-study and blended learning. Classroom Training Classroom courses can be full-time or part-time and last for almost any duration. Its common to see PRINCE2 courses and PMP boot camp-style courses lasting a week. The APMP, a predominantly UK project management qualification is also marketed as a week-long classroom course. However, if you sign up for a Masters degree in Project Management, you could easily be in a university classroom environment for a year on a full-time basis, more if you choose to study part-time. Classroom courses are available all over the world, in every major city and cover a multitude of topics. As well as the certificate-based preparatory courses, classroom learning lends itself well to soft skills, such as leadership or project communication. You will also find courses dedicated to niche or expert subjects such as scope management or managing change on projects. What to Expect In the classroom for a s hort course you can expect to be with a small group of normally around 15 delegates. If you are part of a degree course, you may be with dozens of fellow students in your intake, depending on your university and how the modules of your degree are structured. What happens in a classroom courseis highly dependent on the coach. You may find yourself sitting through 8 hours of slide presentations for a week. Or you may find that your trainer has a program of interactive exercises, case studies, and activities to break up the theory. This also depends on the content its far easier to build exercises around the things that could derail your project than it is on something like how to hold a lessons learned meeting. You should also expect some of the werkstoff to be things you already know unless you are a very beginner. As the trainer has to address the learning needs of everyone in the room, and youll all be at different levels, they will necessarily cover subjects that you are more conf ident in. Best for People who can afford to pay the high cost of classroom training. People who enjoy studying with others in a sociable environment. People who would lack the motivation otherwise to complete their training and who would benefit from having structured content and someone leading them through it. Online Training With Instructor Courses with a defined curriculum lend themselves to online training. Many project management training courses endorsed by professional bodies fall into this category because they have been around a long time and can be licensed to professional training firms who deliver the content to an industry standard. Qualifications like the PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) fall into this category. What to Expect Online training with an instructor is where you work through course material online via a web interface. It may include Reading materialsQuizzes or other assessmentsPodcastsVideos. You then have scheduled time with your instructor, normally live through webinars, audio conferences or facilitated chats in the virtual learning environment. This is your time to ask questions, get clarification on the materials and concepts, and network with other course delegates. Best for People who need someone to keep them motivated with regular check-in points. People who can be self-motivated enough to complete the rest of their work with a tutor standing over them. People who would benefit from having the accountability of a group but who cannot make it to a classroom course. Online Training Without Instructor Online training is a huge growth area for project management (and other business sectors) and youll find there are plenty of self-paced courses that you can use at your leisure. Online training is practical for those who are short on time or who need the flexibility of being able to study anywhere. What to Expect Online training without an instructor relies on you working within the virtual learning environment t o access and review the course materials alone. The downside of not having time with a live instructor is that you may lose the motivation to continue. Online study can be quite lonely if you dont have a group of people going through it with you, helping you on the way. It can also be quite tricky to work out concepts that you dont understand because you are limited to the materials you have purchased. If you dont understand them, there is nowhere to go, except to materials outside of your course, to get more information or the same information explained in ways that make it click. As for the online training with an instructor, your virtual classroom will include a cocktail of video, screenshots, audio content, articles to download or workbooks and most likely quizzes to test your knowledge. You may also find that your course gives you access to sample exam papers if it is designed to help you prepare for and pass a certification. Best for People on limited budgets. People with stro ng self-motivation. People with limited time to study who want to make use of downloadable materials on, for example, their commute. Self-Study Self-study is exactly what it says you build a training program that suits your particular needs, outside of purchasing any formal course. It relies on you first knowing what your training needs are, and then being able to source resources to help you develop professionally. You can self-study your way to qualifications and simply pay the exam fee, but you have to be sure that you can commit to the study to make it worth your while. Theres a big risk with self-study for exam courses that you havent covered all the material or understood the concepts correctly and that can knock your confidence. In certain situations, it could even cause you to fail the exam. Having said that, self-study is cost-effective. If you are highly motivated, have plenty of time and are prepared to research what it is you need to know, it is a good way of making sure that your development activity is completely focused on what you need to learn. What to Expect A lot of hard work Sourcing books or organizing mentoring sessions can be time-consuming. You may still need to buy online courses or learning materials such as access to sample exam papers. Youll need to build a study timetable if you have a hard deadline like an exam coming up. And you probably wont get as much employer support either. Your manager will possibly pay for training courses and give you time away from work to attend them. You might not get that if you explain that you are self-studying. At the other end of the scale, something like reading a book is professional development, and self-study, and isnt that hard. It really depends on what you want to achieve. For shorter, targeted pieces of continuous education, self-study is perfect. Best for People who are highly motivated. People who are extremely clear on their end goals and their learning requirements. People who can hold themselves accountable and who can make time for their professional development. Blended Learning More and more were seeing blended learning taking off in the project management arena. Blended learning is a combination of online and classroom, with elements of self-study thrown in. In fact, its all the learning options mixed together. For that reason, it appeals to lots of people because it offers the best of multiple environments. What to Expect Youll get access to an online training environment with course material, and access to your tutor through forums or scheduled office hours. You will also get time in the classroom with your cohort and your tutors. The idea is that you can kick-start your learning in person and then continue your development in your own time, checking in with the class every so often. This works best for long courses like degree courses or other certification programs offered by further learning institutes that run over a period of months. Best for People who want the best of all training options, or who arent clear what sort of learner they are. People who want the flexibility to fit around their existing commitments but who still want the personal touch from a trainer and a cohort of fellow delegates. Retire a millionaire (even if you havent started yet)

Retire a millionaire (even if you havent started yet)Retire a millionaire (even if you havent started yet)Did you know you canretire a millionaireby contributing just $35 per week? When youre in yur early twenties, retirement seems so far away that it isnt a priority. In fact, according to Bankrate, only one-third of millennials have started saving for retirement. This is so disheartening because we are a brilliant generation of innovative thinkers, hard workers, and do-ers. When we see something we want, we go for it. I say we because I am technically a millennial (just barely) at the age of 36.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhy arent Millennials saving for retirement?Answer We prioritize our current needs and wants over future goals. akaIts my money and I need it now.The single reason my husband and I stopped contributing to retirement was that we listened to Dave Ramseys advic e. We figured wed pause retirement while we hustled hard to get out of debt. The problem is, several years later, we were still in debt and had no retirement savings and nothing to show for our great income. Two people without so much as an associates degree were earning over six figures and were stillliving paycheck to paycheck. The truth is, I can budget all day long. In fact, I am a numbers nerd. The problem isnt lack of planning or budgeting. Its alack of self-controland wanting instant gratification.Wed pay off thousands of dollars of debt only to charge the credit cards back up. Even worse, we had a car trading problem. We had a track record of trading cars in at least once a year or two. In our nine years of marriage, weve owned 15 cars.FIFTEEN, yall. What the actual F were we thinking trading in vehicles that often? Ill just share with you some of my own (what Dave Ramsey calls) stupid tax. When my husband and I were engaged in 2009, I drove a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer with 90k miles. He drove a brand new 2009 Honda Civic SI, six speed. He loved that car. And he didnt owe anything on it. ButHis stepmom had recently passed, and as part of his inheritance, his Dad bought him this car in exchange for Aaron giving him his truck and continuing to make payments on it.So we had a truck payment and my car payment, although I only owed about $3,000 on my car. He owed about $12,000 on his truck. Here was our first huge mistake that started an avalanche of debt and poor car buying choices.Selling an upside down car to CarmaxYoure probably wondering what cars have to do with being able to retire a millionaire. Stay with me.First, we traded my Trailblazer for a $23,000 Chevy Tahoe. I wanted more space and I got it. I also was consideredupside down on my car notebecause I owed more than what the dealership would pay for it. So, stupidly, I financed about $25,000.Then, we thought wed sell my husbands car for cash outright. We werent patient enough to wait it out and sol d it to Carmax for way less than it was worth. We paid off my father in law with the proceeds and bought my husband a beater. It was a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, and he loved it. But eventually, he wanted something nicer and so our quest for vehicles began. We ended upselling an upside down car to Carmaxyears later again when we foolishly bought a brand new Honda Odyssey minivan and were stuck with a $733 per month car payment (for one vehicle). How to retire a millionaire on $60,000 annual incomeSelling my husbands car to pay off his Dad wasnt a bad financial decisioneven though he was driving a beater for a while. However, heres what our financial picture could have looked like if wed have done things differentlyIf wed have kept my car and Aarons beater, we could have paid off my car in a matter of a few months. The rest of our debt, which really was quite small at the timebut felt huge, could have been paid off by the end of the year. But because we chose to double our payments and total debt obligation, we were even deeper in the hole.Lets pretend that Aaron and I did, in fact, keep my car and his beater and as a result, we had $1,500 per month to save or invest after we paid off all of our other debts using thedebt snowball method. At the time, we didnt make much money. We had a combined household income of about $60,000 before taxes. And our rent accounted for 25% of our gross income. Child care was also expensive as I had a five-year-old from my first marriage, and as soon as we got married, we had another on the way.At the time, we were 25 and 26 years old. If we would have invested $1,000 into our 401k plans at work ($500 each, or approximately 20% of our gross income monthly each), assuming an annual average rate of return of 10%, we would have approximately $201,000 today.Take advantage of the 401k employer matchThe above example is assuming were only putting our own money into the mix, and its based solely on compound interest, not increases in contributions based on raises. Most employers offer a company match to retirement contributions. For example, my husbands employer contributes 3% towards his 401k no matter what, and this money is vested immediately. Pretty cool, right? To take things a step further, his employer will also match 100% of his contributions up to 5%. So basically, if my husband contributes 5% of his pretax income towards retirement, his employer contributes 8% and hes now got 13% growing at an exponential rate. Now, because I dont want to shareallof our business, Im going to use the standard household income for this next calculation as an example. Lets assume my husbands gross income is $67,000 annually before taxes. Remember, if wed have followed the scenario above, we would have $201,000 in retirement. Now lets assume he wants to continue contributing 20% of his gross income and his employer contributes 8% and his total contribution is 28% or $18,760 per year.Assuming an inflation of 3% and raises of 2% annually, he would be on track to retire by age 67.This article originally appeared on Melissa Blevins. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Develop Your Leadership Skills at Work - The Muse

How to Develop Your Leadership Skills at Work - The MuseHow to Develop Your Leadership Skills at Work Ever feel like youre at the bottom of a long chain of authority? Pretty sure there arent enough resources at your company to help you develop essential skills thatll get you moving up that chain? Well, youre not alone. According to the annual Global Millennials survey, cited by Business Insider, most young workers (two-thirds) are planning to leave their positions by 2020. And 71% of the people planning to jump ship in the next two years will be doing it because they feel there arent enough leadership development resources available at their current organization. While thats a clear indicator that companies have a lot to improve upon on their ends, a lack of clear opportunity isnt always a good reason to leave a job you like. There are plenty of different ways to develop your leadership skills- even if there arent any official programs or tracks in place for you. Because being a lead er isnt about having the anfhrer title, its about stepping up and becoming the kind of person others aspire to be. So, because you shouldnt have to leave your job to find chances for growth in your career, here are ways to create these opportunities for yourself- no matter where you work. 1. Get to Know Your TeamAll good leaders know their team members- their strengths, weaknesses, and how people can best complement one another. And Im not saying you need to make some Devil Wears Prada-style flashcards of everyones information just start with simple conversations and build from there. Take the time to really get to know your company, its history, its values, its industry, and the departments and people that keep it all going- even if bonding with co-workers doesnt always come naturally to you. Do you think your babo got where she is now without doing the research or understanding the context of her work first? If you find this to be a challenging, create time on your calendar to mak e sure it happens, whether its a 30-minute lunch, or just a five-minute coffee run with someone you dont know too well.2. Help a Co-worker OutNotice anyone whos super busy or stressed out lately? Offer your spare time to help him out or take on some of his tasks. No matter where you fall in the hierarchy, you still need to embrace a team player mentality- and that means recognizing the value of working together toward a common goal. It takes great maturity to be able to prioritize whats needed most and respond to that, even if it doesnt immediately benefit or interest you to do so. If you genuinely work at being a point of support or guidance to your peers, youll learn so much more about communication, collaboration, and trust than you would by getting militrischer abschirmdienst your job wont send you to that leadership conference. Bonus Im pretty sure everyone would also love you because an extra hand is almost always appreciated.3. Take InitiativeYou can always go above and beyon d at your current job by taking on more responsibilities around the office. The more you do, the more you learn about your workplace and what makes it run smoothly. If you notice something lacking at your company, you can easily flex those management muscles by recognizing small weaknesses and developing plans to address them. They can range from being good for the long-term, such as writing up a new training manual or re-organizing the internal drive, or just be about helping out right now, like showing a new person on a different team how to use the copy machine. These acts- both big and small- show your boss that youre a self-starter. Even more, advocating for your co-workers or showing around a new employee are all ways to practice management, no matter your current position.4. Ask for MoreAt the end of the day, if you dont feel that youre growing enough at your company, quitting your job shouldnt be your first impulse. Sure, if there really seem to be no opportunities to improve , you can consider looking for something new. But a conversation with your boss might be all it takes to shake things up for your work responsibilities. The key is not to go into the conversation on a negative note, but rather to come prepared with specific ideas for ways in which you could work on your leadership skills. Maybe you volunteer to lead team meetings, or perhaps you suggest mentoring new employees, or if youre more of a behind-the-scenes person, you revise those old style manuals. If nothing else, this conversations great practice for advocating for yourself- seriously, no one has ever solved a problem by ignoring it. Chances are, your boss will really respect you for your dedication to the company and enthusiasm for taking on more. As long as youre able to complete your current work, odds are high you wont be turned down.Leaders dont just happen because other people made them that way. It takes practice, and if you look hard enough and get creative, youll notice plenty of hidden opportunities all around you to strengthen that leadership muscle. That means focusing on employee zurckhalten. Before you pause and say, My employees are very satisfied, first think of the Gallup-Healthways study from September of 2011 that showed Americans now feel worse about their jobs, and their work environments, than ever before. New statistics havent shown any kind of uptick, so as an employer you should be doing everything you can to increase employee retention before your workforce jumps shi p. The best part about that though is that you dont necessarily have to spend money in order to make your employees happy. Lets take a look at a few ways you can be sure your employees are happy and satisfied with your company.Meaningful WorkHave you ever done something for work and thought that it welches absolutely meaningless, and that whatever you were doing made no difference in your life or the lives of others? You need to be sure that your employees know that their work is meaningful. Doing so will make them more productive and satisfied in what they are doing. Its also a surefire way of increasing employee retention. You can easily do this by supporting your workforces progress- even if its small. If you notice progress on an on-going project, be sure to tell those working on it what a great job they are doing. Recognizing their progress, and making them feel as though it is meaningful, is certain to increase their productivity. A lot can come from motivation, and its freePr omote Your Workers Well-BeingYou want work to get done, thats a certainty. However, you also want to be sure that your employees are healthy and avoiding burnout. If you overwork your employees, you will see them crash and burn right before your eyes- and your work with it. Plus, they may start to hate their work and actively look for a way out. You can avoid this easily by communicating with your employees and knowing what they need in order to get the job done right. Are they overwhelmed with too much on their plates? Are you expecting too much from them in a short amount of time? Do they have the resources necessary to accomplish the tasks you platzset for them? These are all questions you need to ask yourself and your employees as well. Setting high expectations for your employees is great, and in fact can act as a motivating factor. However, setting them too high can lead to burnt-out employees that no longer have the time or energy to care for the work they are doing. That ofte n leads to poor employee retention and a high turnover rate. Communicate with your employees often and be sure you are not pushing them too hard. A burnt-out employee is an unproductive and unhappy employee. The best part? Communication with your employees is free.RecognitionWe talk about it a lot here at Spark Hire, but thats only because its very important. Employee appreciation and recognition for their work equals out to higher productivity. If employees know that the work they are doing is being noticed, and appreciated, they are likely to repeat their actions and work harder next time to keep that recognition up. Again, employee appreciation doesnt have to equal out to dollar signs. Simple communication and verbal recognition is enough to make any employee happy. If you have an employee or team that is doing a great job and constantly meeting or surpassing goals, then be sure to let them know you have noticed all of their hard work. Other employees will notice their praise and will likely work hard to receive their own, thus increasing productivity and employee retention across the board. Before you can try and sell a great company culture or a great company to new hires, you need to first work on those you have already hired. Communicate with your workforce and understand what it is they need or want in order to be satisfied and productive.Do you think that you have a happy, satisfied workforce? How to handle short-term jobs in your resume work history

How to handle short-term jobs in your resume work historyHow to handle short-term jobs in your resume work historyAdding structure to your job search can be a key component to helping you succeed, especially when youve had short-term jobs. The company was called Shortstop Ltd. You worked there for only three months. Now its a blip on your work history, and youre wondering Should you leave it on your resume, or should you leave it off and be stuck with a work-history eu-agrarpolitik?In general, the rules of thumb for short job stints are these, according to Steve Burdan, a certified professional resume writer who works with LaddersIf a given job lasted less than six months, you can leave it off of your resume. If a given job fits into your recent past, i.e. the past year or two, and it lasted six to 12 months, you must put the job description into your Work History section. For jobs that lasted six to 12 months and are buried in your past work chronology, leave them off.If a job last at least 12 months, you should put it on your resume.Beyond the rules of thumb, however, are qualifiers and exceptionsUse years only in work historyMany people tend to put both months and years on their job listings because they feel obligated to be precise in their work chronologies. Such thinking is a hangover from the earlier days of a job seekers work life the pre-resume time when candidates filled out job applications that required the months and dates of your employment history. One reason to leave months off is to give yourself elbow room to leave off jobs with less than six months of tenure. Another is to keep hiring professionals from nitpicking.I dont want some HR guy picking through and nitpicking and trying to account for every single month, Burdan said. Why wake that sleeping dog?Avoiding the job-hopper labelBut what if you have two six-month positions within a single year? Burdan recommends choosing only one of the two to list in a work history for a given year.Typically, you dont want to put two short-term jobs together, he said. The default impression two short-term jobs give is a job-hopping tendency. In that situation, I would in fact leave off one of the two.Burdan cited a hypothetical example a job seeker in his mid-30s whos been employed for 10 to 15 years. During that time, he has had eight jobs, two of them for six months or less. If those short stints are left in the work history, it increases the likelihood that a reader will conclude the candidate wont stay anywhere for long.In such a case, Burdan recommends winnowing down work history to the best job descriptions. Were a job seeker to have three positions over a 1.5-year time window, he would typically try to pick only one, or at fruchtwein two, positions to titel the given chronology.Special casesContract work A series of short gigs done under contractual or freelance circumstances should be bundled up in a section labeled Contract Experience. Burdan recommends compressing such work to be precise without sacrificing veracity.Relevant but dated experience Resumes typically cover no more than 15 to 20 years of work history. Work history thats relevant but older than that should be bundled into a section titled Previous Experience.Multiple short jobs with the same employerFast-moving companies often promote their best employees fast and furiously, shifting them from one task to the other as needs and priorities shift. The resulting patchwork of short-term jobs is a tribute to an employees versatility but can be difficult to parse and may even be mistaken for job-hopping by the inattentive resume reader.Handle this special case with formatting. If youve been at a company 13 years and have had 10 positions, list the company flush left and then at flush right, list the accumulative dates 1995 through 2008, for example. Then break out the most recent, most advanced three or four positions, bolding the position titles, describing each job, and listing achievements and bul let points just as if the listings were all for separate companies. Have the last position cumulatively cover the most distant dates and all the relative positions there under and have its last bullet point read, Promoted through levels of progressive responsibility. This keeps your resume from delving into the distant past and more junior positions, Burdan said.Resume truth or consequencesDoes leaving off short jobs constitute lying? No. Such editing is at the opposite end of the truth spectrum from lying, which boils down to making things up.In fact, leaving short stints off a resume is not only permissible truth-wise, it helps to transform the document into a lean and mean marketing tool. Most often, 95 percent of the time, leaving a six-month job off will not only tighten a resume up, but it accounts for the fact that a job seeker wasnt at a job long enough to have a positive impact, Burdan said.Theres always an exception to the rule, however Sometimes short stints produced solid results that the job seeker can document.Such productive short stints are typically rare, but they do merit inclusion on the resume.

My coworkers did the nicest thing ever for me and it saved my life

My coworkers did the nicest thing ever for me and it saved my lifeMy coworkers did the nicest thing ever for me and it saved my lifeMy husband was in the throes of long-term unemployment we had already foreclosed on our home and moved into a scary neighborhood that I could afford on my pathetic but steady salary. Then I lost my job. Welcome to the Great Recession.I immediately applied to every temp agency in the city and immediately landed a position with a start-up-unternehmen wholesale insurance company employing about 50 people that had only been in business two years. It didnt pay the same money as my miserable lost corporate job, and I lost 20% of my weekly pay every unpaid holiday, but I could pay my cheap slum rent and the people I was working for were wonderful.Therbeie was very little left over after bills were paid, but after ruined credit and a foreclosure, we were used to doing without. I packed lunch every day instead of joining my coworkers in restaurants, worked every hour my supervisorin would give me, volunteered for overtime, worked sick so as not to cut my paycheck. I never missed a day for a year and my supervisor apologized that she was not in a position to hire me permanently.I took a second job, driving on weekends, to pay for the failed transmission on my 25-year-old car. It was too much. After a month without a day off, I was so exhausted I tripped over my own feet and fell and broke my arm.The first thought was, I have lost both my jobs. My second thought was, I have no health insurance. My third thought was, these groceries have to be put away before I can go to the emergency room.I called both supervisors on Monday to explain what happened and that it would be three months before I could work again, and I tried to resign. Both supervisors said no, that my jobs would be waiting for me.Ho, ho You all thought that was the end of the story, that keeping my jobs is the nicest thing that was ever done for me. But noI called the utility com panies, including my badly needed ADT burglar alarm, to explain that I would be unable to pay my bills for three months, and why I would have no income. All the utilities set me up so I wouldnt get disconnected, and ADT even credited my account, giving me three months tafelgeschirr free.Still not the nicest thingWith destroyed credit, there was no credit card to fall back on, but there was enough in my savings to pay three months rent, and my kitchen was stocked with food. If we were very careful, and if I didnt need surgery, wed be okay my only worry was paying for gasoline and the medical expenses.Because I was a contractor with a temp agency, my supervisor at the insurance company didnt have any of my private information. But she had my cell because Id called her. One month after the fall, she phoned to ask how I am and could I give her my address my coworkers were collecting a potluck for us and she wanted to deliver it. I was too embarrassed about my slum address to give it to her, and instead sent my mother-in-law to pick up.Still not the nicest thing. My mother-in-law arrived bearing a grocery bag. I expected a couple casseroles and thats what we got. And at the bottom, a greeting card. Again, after a year of coworker birthday cards and cakes and baby and wedding showers from these wonderful people I worked for, I was not surprised by a greeting card.I opened the envelope and pulled out a get well card signed by everyone in the company, telling me they couldnt wait for me to come back.Still not the nicest thing.Inside the greeting card was a $300 gift card from a local supermarket that also sold gasoline, and almost $600 in cash. My coworkers who knew we were living paycheck to paycheck collected not only a potluck, but enough cash to get us by until I could come back.I wept. After 20 years of abuse and being taken advantage of by my past jobs, I got genuine concern, caring, and love from people I had felt inferior to and inadequate around. I was so emba rrassed about being so poor compared to my affluent, sophisticated coworkers that I hid a great deal and they really didnt know me very well. Yet they had done this of their own volition it was a private thing among the employees, not from the company. Even people in our satellite arbeitszimmer on the other end of the country that I had never met had contributed. I didnt realize how scared I had been until I had that money in my hand. Now my slumlord wouldnt need to know that I wasnt working and he wouldnt have to put us on the street. I phoned the office and I thanked them and I wept.I finally realized that I was poor, we were struggling, I didnt know anything about fancy restaurants or European vacations, I could only contribute a few cans to the Christmas food drive instead of bagfuls, but I was accepted and respected and I was a good worker and they wanted me back and they cared about us. I wept. That was the nicest thing that has ever been done for meA year later, the utility bi lls were finally current again, and these same people threw me a surprise 50th birthday party with cake and decorations and gifts. And a year after that, 3 years after they met me, they made my 51st birthday my official hire date. Now for the first time in my life, Im not worried about the bills, I own more than one pair of shoes, I have 3 credit cards and Im planning a vacation and hoping for a mortgage soon.I love these people and they genuinely love me and the greeting card is in a frame on my desk. I will never work for anyone else.Susan D Smith has aBA in English and Education from Virginia Tech. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

What Recruiters Look at When Stalking Your Social Media

What Recruiters Look at When Stalking Your Social MediaWhat Recruiters Look at When Stalking Your Social Media You probably already know recruiters are looking at your LinkedIn page, but what about your other social media platforms ? You know, the ones where you post pictures of your latest vacation, share what you had for dinner and occasionally tag your friends in memes. Why, you might wonder, would a recruiter possibly be interested in viewing things like that?As it turns out, those personal details are precisely why recruiters and hiring managers keep tabs on applicants social media accounts, says career coach Hallie Crawford. It can help them get a more accurate idea about who you are outside of your resume - a more personal view into your life, she explains. A resume can tell them your qualifications, but your social media profile can help them determine your personality type and if you would be a good fit for company culture .Plus, recruiters are looking for red flags - risqu photos, bad language, signs of drugs use - that would show them youd be a less than ideal man or woman to have in their offices. So now that you know why theyre looking, how about knowing what theyre looking at?According to Crawford, recruiters and hiring managers are concentrating their efforts on two sections of your Facebook page - your about me section, and your photo albums.About Me They will want to see how you describe yourself and if it matches upwith how you have described yourself in your cover letter and resume, Crawford says. Any discrepancies could cost you points pre-interview. Whats more, Crawford says, they will also be looking for proper spelling and grammar in this section, to see how seriously you take those skills.Photos When it comes to your photos albums, a hiring manager will be checking not only your photos but also your descriptions, Crawford warns. A hiring manager wants to see if you represent yourself in a professional way. To come off in the fruchtwein positive pre-meeting light, you will want to avoid using profanity, sexual or drug references, Crawford says.Who Youre Following Recruiters like to see if you have any mutual connections and if you are connected with others in your industry, Crawford explains. Following others in your industry is a smart thing to do no matter what - watching their feeds can give you a scoop on a new job opening, company announcements, the latest tech and much more.Tweets Recruiters will be checking to see if you share useful information, if you share information relevant to your trade or if you just use tweets to fight with others, Crawford says. If youre applying for a job, take a look at your tweeting history and consider deleting anything that wont show your best - and most thoughtful - self to a potential employer.Followers Recruiters will check out the kind of followers you attract, Crawford says. Plus, theyll want to see how friendly and social you seem to be wit h your followers, she says. What you say to them and what you say back, she explains, can also give them insight into your personal relationships and if you would be a good cultural fit for the company.Pictures You probably figured this, right? But recruiters are looking to see more than your photography skills (or lack thereof). They will want to see how you represent yourself , Crawford says. For example, if you are at a party, do you represent yourself in a dignified way? Crawford asks, or, do you post things that others would consider inappropriate?
